where we love to sail...

Portage Indian

Ahoy there sailor! You have surfed into the Portage Lakes Yacht Club domain where we love to sail. Come visit us on the South side of Akron by taking the Manchester Road/Oh-93 exit off of Interstate 277 and traveling south 3.3 miles. Once you reach Turkeyfoot Lake Rd/Oh-619 take a left and go a mile taking a right on Lahm Drive. At the end of Lahm Drive you'll find our den around the back of the Turkeyfoot Island Club premises. The street address is 4528 Lahm Dr. Akron, Oh 44319.

Founded in March of 1936, the Portage Lakes Yacht Club is one of the oldest clubs in the greater Akron area. Our members are involved in Sunfish, Snipe, Interlake and other sailing classes (even ice boats) with a rich history of having placed well at regional, national and international events. Past club commodores have been at the helm of the national Snipe class and involved with the area power squadron. Our club focuses on small lake (<20') sail boats with the Sunfish coming in at a little under 14', the Snipe a little under 16' and the Interlake right at 18'. Owners of other boat classes are welcome.

Sailing at Portage Lakes Yacht Club is a fun experience in which family and friends can enjoy being outside on warm, sunny days sailing or just watching others sail. Some of our members enjoy testing their skills racing while others spend their time on relaxing trips with the wind in their hair and their family on the boat. Still others enjoy picnicking on the grounds and watching the boats as they sail by. Our six month sailing season starts in May and ends in October. Sunday and holiday late mornings and early afternoons you'll find our boats out on Turkeyfoot Lake.

Whether you are an experienced sailor, looking to learn to sail, or just want to spend sometime on one of Akron's most beautiful lakes relaxing and watching others sail, we have a place for you. If you would like to see yourself, your family and your friends on Turkeyfoot Lake, contact us to find out how.

Sincerely,

Members of the PLYC
